We have all been there – crunched for time and short on budget. In a rush to get our home improvement projects completed quickly and as cheap as possible, we tend to overlook some of the basic “do’s and don’ts” of home remodeling – mistakes that can cause major headaches, not to mention a blown budget.

One major mistake many homeowners make when undertaking any home project – no matter the size, big or small – is that they underestimate the cost and time it will take to complete the remodel. A big reason for this is a lack of planning, which leads us to our first “home remodeling do” on our list:

You may be tempted to tackle your renovation work head-on – after all, you know what needs to be done right? Failing to make a proper renovation or remodeling plan, however, will lead to big problems. Even though a project, such as a wall tear down, sounds simple on the surface, there are actually a number of issues you will want to consider. The same goes for all home projects.

Your plan should include things such as what tools you will need, the steps you (or your contractor in most cases) will need to take, when each task needs to be finished, measurements and, of course, budget.

Just like when you travel, you need a road map to ensure you arrive to your destination. It’s one thing to know you are driving to New York. It is a whole other thing if you actually know how to get there!

Don’t Ignore Upkeep and Home Maintenance

Another common mistake homeowners tend to make is neglecting upkeep and basic maintenance on their homes in lieu of a new home remodel. If you have lingering issues around the home, consider taking care of those first, as they are likely to become bigger problems over time. The same goes for home maintenance. If your roof needs to be patched, take care of that before starting your renovation or remodel. You never know when a storm may blow through, causing a leak or additional structural damage to the roof.

Don’t Undertake a Home Remodeling or Renovation Project You Do Not Have the Skills For

Although this may seem like it goes without saying, you would be surprised how many DIY fanatics will take on a remodel that they do not have the skills or experience to complete. It is easy to fall into that mindset of “how hard can it be?” The answer to that, is very hard, very painful and very costly.

If you are unsure if you can complete any home project or have even a little doubt, your best bet is to consult a certified, licensed, home remodeling professional. The money, time, and hassle it can save you is well worth it, and odds are the experience they bring to the table will make benefit the end product immensely.
